Mustang
Introduced April 1964
1965
The Mustang was introduced in April of 1964
as the 1965 model. It is sometimes referred
as the 1964 and a half. It was available
in a coupe, a convertible and a fastback
2+2. The convertible is the Indy Pace car
for 1964. The 170ci six cylinder was the
standard engine; a 260 V8 and a 289 V8 engine
were also available. The Mustang rode on
14 inch wheels. The base price was now $2368
and the car had a very square shape with
angled fenders, a long hood, short rear
and 108 inch wheel base. The options included
standard and deluxe interiors and GT/ The
standard grill was an enlongated oval with
a mustang emblem in the center of chrome
cross bars. The GT also had fog lights on
the grill inboard of the headlights. The
side had a C notch that ran from the front
nearly to the rear wheel well. The back
of the C had a small chrome vertical detail.
There was a single headlight and the turn
indicators were in the valance below the
bumper. The tail lights were square with
two chrome vertical strips and the backup
lights were under the thin straight bumper
in the rear valance.
1966 The 1966
Mustang was similar to the 1965 model. It
was again available in a coupe, a convertible
and a fastback 2+2. The 200ci 120 hp six
cylinder was the standard engine; and a
289ci 200hp V8 engine was also available.
The Mustang rode on 6.95x14 inch wheels.
The base price was now $2734 and the car
had a very square shape with angled fenders,
a long hood, short rear and 108 inch wheel
base. The options included standard and
deluxe interiors and GT/ The standard grill
was an enlongated oval with a mustang emblem
in the center of mesh material. The side
had a C notch that ran from the front nearly
to the rear wheel well. The back of the
C had a small chrome vertical detail with
three chrome fingers reaching forward. There
was a single headlight and the turn indicators
were in the valance below the bumper. The
taillights were square with two chrome vertical
strips and the backup lights were under
the thin straight bumper in the rear valance.
1967 The
1967 Mustang was restyled for 1967. It was
again available in a coupe, a convertible
and a fastback and a fastback GT. The 200ci
120 hp six cylinder was the standard engine;
and a 289ci 200hp V8 engine was also available.
The Mustang rode on 6.95x14 inch wheels.
The base price was now $2791 and the car
had a very square shape with angled fenders,
a long hood, short rear and 108 inch wheel
base. The fastback roofline now came all
the way to the rear of the vehicle. The
options included standard and deluxe interiors
and GT/ The standard grill was an enlongated
oval with a mustang emblem in the center
of mesh material with a single horizontal
bar. The side had a C notch
that ran from the front nearly to the rear
wheel well. The front end and grill had
a slight rake and the rear panel was concave
with inset taillights in threes. The GT
had a bright panel across the rear section
and retained the chrome trim around the
tail lights. There was a single
headlight and the turn indicators were in
the valance below the bumper. The backup
lights were under the thin straight bumper
in the rear valance.
There were two Shelby models in 1967, a
GT350 and a GT500. These models features
rear deck spoilers, side scoops on the sail
panel and just forward of the rear wheel
well. They also had different tail lights
and grills. There was also a hood scoop.
1968 The 1968
Mustang was nearly the same as the 1967.
It was again available in a coupe, a convertible
and a fastback and a fastback GT. The 200ci
115 hp six cylinder was the standard engine;
and a 289ci 195hp V8 engine was also available.
There were other engine options available
including a 390ci engine and the Shelby
cars also had a larger V8 engine. The Mustang
rode on 6.95x14 inch wheels. The base price
was now $2791 and the car had a very square
shape with angled fenders, a long hood,
short rear and 108 inch wheel base. The
fastback roofline now came all the way to
the rear of the vehicle. The options included
standard and deluxe interiors and GT/ The
standard grill was an enlongated oval with
a mustang emblem in the center of mesh material
with a single horizontal bar. The side had
a C notch that ran from the front nearly
to the rear wheel well. The front end and
grill had a slight rake and the rear panel

220hp, 351ci 250, 390ci, 428 V8 engine was
also available. The Mustang rode on 6.95x14
inch wheels. The base price was now $3078
and the car had a very square shape with
angled fenders, a long hood, short rear
and 108 inch wheel base. The fastback roofline
now came nearly all the way to the rear
of the vehicle with a slight
spoiler built in. The options included standard
and deluxe interiors and GT/ The standard
grill was an enlongated oval with a mustang
emblem set to one side of a plastic grid.
The side had a scoop on the rear fender
above the rear wheel well. The front end
and grill had a pronounced rake and the
rear panel was concave with larger inset
taillights in threes. There was a dual headlight
arrangement and the turn
indicators were in the valance below the
bumper. The backup lights were under the
thin straight bumper in the rear valance.
The exhaust exited under the valance and
had a variety of tips depending on the model.
The convertible and the Boss 302 did not
have the scoop on the fender top. The Mach
1 had a clock above the glove box door.
1970 The Mustang
was restyled in 1969 and retained much of
this restyle into 1970. It was again available
in a grande, a convertible and a fastback
and now a Mach 1 and a Boss 302. The 200ci
115 hp six cylinder was the standard engine;
a 250ci 155hp six cylinder, and a 302ci
220hp, 351ci 250, 390ci, 428 V8 engine was
also available. The Mustang rode on F60x15
tires. The base price was now $3628 and
the car had a very square shape with angled
fenders, a long hood, short rear and 108
inch wheel base. The fastback roofline now
came nearly all the way to the rear of the
vehicle with a slight spoiler built in.
The options included standard and deluxe
interiors and GT/ The standard grill was
an enlongated oval with a mustang emblem
set to one side of a plastic grid. The front
end and grill had
a pronounced rake and the rear panel was
concave with larger inset taillights in
threes. There was a single headlight arrangement
and the turn indicators were in the valance
below the bumper. The front of the fender
now had two horizontal slots in them. The
backup lights were under the thin straight
bumper in the rear valance. The exhaust
exited under the valance and had a variety
of tips depending on the model. The convertible
and the Boss 302 did not have the scoop
on the fender top.
1971
The Mustang was completely restyled in 1971
and continued about the same until 1974.
The wheelbase was now 109 inches and there
were seven engine choices available. The
standard engine was the 250ci 145hp six
cylinder, and the 302ci 210hp V8. The Mach
1 was also available for 1971 as was a Grande
with a vinyl roof. The car was longer with
a longer hood and a lower, flatter fastback
roofline.
The Mach 1 had two scoops cut into the hood.
The grill was a wide mesh filled rectangle
with single headlights. The grill was bisected
by a chrome bar and had the Mustang emblem
in a chrome rectangle at the center. The
turn indicators were just below a thin bumper.
The Mach 1 grill had only the center emblem
and the turn indicators were set into the
grill just to the inside the headlights.
1972 The Mustang
continued about the same as 1971. The wheelbase
was now 109 inches and there were seven
engine choices available. The standard engine
was the 250ci 99hp six cylinder, and the
302ci 141hp V8. The Mach 1 was also available
for 1972 as was a Grande with a vinyl roof.
There was also a convertible offered. The
car was longer with a longer hood and a
lower, flatter fastback roofline. The Mach
1 had two scoops cut into the hood. The
grill was a wide mesh filled rectangle with
single headlights. The grill was unchanged.
The turn indicators were just below a thin
bumper. The Mach 1 grill had only the center
emblem and the turn indicators were set
into the grill just to the inside the headlights.
1973 The Mustang
continued about the same as 1971. The wheelbase
was now 109 inches and there were seven
engine choices available. The standard engine
was the 302ci 141hp V8, a six cylinder was
available.
The Mach 1 was also available for 1973 as
were four other models including a convertible,
the final one offered (until many years
later). The car was longer with a longer
hood and a lower, flatter fastback roofline.
The Mach 1 had two scoops cut into the hood.
The grill was now a criss-cross plastic
pattern, the turn indicators were vertical
rectangles within the grill and the single
headlights were set into a square chrome
pan. The Mustang emblem was in the center
within a chrome rectangle. The 1973 was
the final “big” Mustang.
1974
The Mustang for 1974 was totally restyled
and downsized being named the Mustang II.
The wheelbase was far shorter at only 96.2
and a 139ci 4ci and a 169ci 6 ci engine
were offered. There were hardtop coupes
and a fastback 2+2 models offered as well
as a Mach 1. The car now rode on BR70x13
tires and wheels. It had a single headlight
and criss-cross plastic grill with turn
indicators inset. The taillights were large
dual stop lights with marker and backup
lights in the center of the casting. The
government mandated crash resistant bumpers
were large front and rear with vertical
bumper guards. A vinyl top could be ordered
on the Ghia models. The fastback now featured
a lift hatch instead of a trunk space. This
accessed the interior of the car when lifted.
1975 The Mustang
II continued largely unchanged. The wheelbase
was held at 96.2 and a 139ci 83hp 4ci and
a 169ci 97hp 6 ci engine were offered. Now
a 302ci V8 could again be ordered.
1976 and 1977
The Mustang II continued largely unchanged.
The wheelbase was held at 96.2 and a 140ci
83hp 4ci and a 170ci 93hp 6 ci engine were
offered. Now a 302ci 139hpV8 could again
be ordered. Models now included a Mach1
and a Cobra II. A front air scoop was included
under the front bumper on all models. The
Cobra II models had a chin spoiler and dual
paint stripes on the body.
1978 The Mustang
II continued largely unchanged. The wheelbase
was held at 96.2 and a 140ci 88hp 4 cylinder
and a 171ci 90hp 6 ci engine were offered.
Now a 302ci 139hpV8 could again be ordered.
Models now included a Mach1 and a Cobra
II. A front air scoop was included under
the front bumper on all models. The Cobra
II models had a chin spoiler and dual paint
stripes on the body.
1979 and
1980 The Mustang was totally
restyled again in 1979. The wheelbase was
increased to 100.4 inches and a 140ci 4
and a 200ci or 225ci 6 ci engine were offered.
A 255ci V8 could again be ordered and a
turbo version was added. The body was hard
angled and the criss-cross grill slooped
back away from the bumper. A hood scoop
was offered on the turbo versions and dual
head and taillights were standard. A fastback
with hatchback and a coupe were offered.
1981 and 1982 The Mustang were not much
different from the 1979. The wheelbase was
increased to 100.4 inches and a 140ci 4
and a 200ci or a 255ci 115hp V8 could again
be ordered and a turbo version was added.
The body was still hard angled and the criss-cross
grill slooped back away from the bumper.
A hood scoop was offered on the turbo versions
and dual head and taillights were standard.
A fastback with hatchback and a coupe were
offered. Options also included a T-Bar Top,
imitation Cabriolet roof and louvers on
the fastback lift gate. The 1982 offered
140ci 86hp 4, 200ci 87hp 6, 255ci 111hp
V8 and a 302ci HO 157hp V8. The GT had its
own grill and hood with a scoop and horizontal
bars. The T-Bar roof was also still available.
1983
The Mustang was totally restyled again in
1983. The wheelbase was increased to 100.5
inches and a 140ci 4 and a 232ci 112hp V6
engine were offered. A 302ci V8 could again
be ordered. The body angles were softened,
the grill and bumper were redesigned and
a Ford oval was now centered on the grill.
A fastback with hatchback and a coupe were
offered and the convertible was reintroduced.
Prices now ranged from $8466 for the L series
to $14,426 for the GT.
1984 The Mustang was largely unchanged from
1983. The wheelbase was still 100.5 inches
and a 140ci 88hp (145 or 175 with the turbo
option) 4 and a 232ci 120hp V6 engine were
offered. A 302ci 175hp V8 could again be
ordered. The body angles were softened,
the grill and bumper were redesigned and
a Ford oval was now centered on the grill.
A fastback with hatchback and a coupe were
offered and the convertible was again in
the lineup. The GL and GLX models were dropped
and the SVO was offered. Prices now ranged
from $8856 for the L series to $6,713 for
the GT. The 1984 Mustang was also used by
Police Departments in 15 states.
1985 and
1986 The Mustang was little
restyled in 1984. The wheelbase was 100.5
inches and a 140ci 88hp 4, 140ci 175hp turbo
4, 232ci 120hp V6 engine, 302ci 165hp V8
were offered. A 302ci 210hp GT V8 could
also be ordered. The body angles were the
same, the grill, now slotted, and bumper
were redesigned and a Ford oval was now
centered on the grill. A fastback, SVO,
GT and a coupe were offered and the convertible
still being offered. The models were designated
as follows; LX 2 dr (4ci) $8325, LX hatchback
(4ci) $8880, SVO hatchback (Turbo 4ci) $15,646,
LX conv V6 $13,957 and GT hatchback (V8)
$12,449.
1987 and
1990 The Mustang was restyled
in 1987. The wheelbase was 100.5 inches
and a 140ci 90hp 4, 302ci V8 was offered.
A GT V8 could also be ordered. The body
was again smoothed, the grill, now slotted,
and bumper were redesigned and a Ford oval
was now centered on the grill. A fastback,
Saleen, GT and a coupe were offered and
the convertible still being offered. The
models were designated as follows; LX 2
dr (4ci) $9948, LX hatchback (4ci) $10,367,
LX conv. $14,729 and GT (V8) $17,529, GT
hatchback $13,783.
